Editing Joseph Conrad

Jacket

Cambridge Edition of Under Western Eyes

With Paul Eggert, I have prepared the text and apparatus of Under Western Eyes for the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Joseph Conrad. The edition was published on 10 October 2013. The challenges of editing a novel with such a complex textual history leads to a strong desire for better digital methods to help with the everyday workflow of an edition and to present the documents, texts, variation and working notes in a more collaborative environment.

I am currently conducting preliminary work for a proposed edition of Conrad’s Nostromo. Working towards a digital environment for editing this novel is in the front of my mind. See the AustESE Project for ways in which I hope to do this: http://austese.net/

We have been working on a digital edition of Nostromo in two versions: T. P.’s Weekly and the Harper’s codex here at UVic. We’d be happy to share what we have if you want — scans of part III of the novel in both editions and some xml markup of both as well.
